Sanitary Sewer Master Plan

Client: City of Waukesha

Location: Waukesha, Wisconsin

Donohue completed a two-phase project to develop a Sanitary Sewer Master Plan for Waukesha. This project identified the most cost-effective combination of Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) reduction, increased conveyance, and/or flow equalization to provide reliable wastewater collection for current and future customers. The first phase focused primarily on evaluating system flows and capacities and included the following:

  • Hydraulic Modeling and Calibration using MIKE URBAN
  • Flow Monitoring
  • I/I Study
  • Interceptor Sewer Modeling and Preliminary Design
  • CMOM Program Planning
  • Smoke Testing
  • Pump Station Flood Protection
  • Force Main Condition/Reliability Assessment
  • Pump Station Hydraulic Evaluation

The second phase further refined the alternatives and focused on system condition and integrity. Tasks included:

  • Preparation of a CMOM Plan in compliance with EPA guidelines and meeting the City’s goals and requirements
  • System condition assessment expanding on the flow and system improvement analysis conducted in Phase I
  • Development of a cost-effective program to maintain gravity and force main sewers including a Sewer System Evaluation Survey (SSES) for portions of the system with high I/I
  • Alternatives Analysis
  • Recommendations for additional interceptors to eliminate pump stations serving the western and southeastern portions of the sewer service area

The end result was a 20-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the City that is serving as a roadmap for improvements.
