The Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA) has launched a Global Initiative program to help solve water treatment and environmental issues around the world. The program’s chairperson is Donohue’s Eric Lynne. The first project that the Initiative has undertaken is addressing the wastewater treatment challenges in the small community of Piedras Blancas, Costa Rica.

A group of CSWEA members traveled to Costa Rica in August 2014 on behalf of the Global Initiative program in order to gather data and talk to the locals about the significant concerns regarding their wastewater system that is no longer able to keep up with the demand. CSWEA aims to develop a long-term solution for the community utilizing a design competition in 2015 within CSWEA student chapters.

Want to be part of making this Global Initiative a success? The team is looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers and mentors for student design teams. Also, financial support is greatly appreciated. Learn more about how to volunteer or donate at www.cswea.org/globalinitiative

The Fall 2014 edition of the CSWEA Magazine featured an article about the Piedras Blancas project (starting on page 12) at www.cswea.org/magazine/CS_Fall2014_RICH.pdf
